The dobok, piece by piece.

The white dobok predates the art being called Taekwondo. It comes from traditional Korean martial arts (Subak, Taekkyeon) and was refined with Japanese karategi influence during the occupation (1910–1945).

The path of color

Six belts,
one single path.

In traditional Korean martial arts there were only two belts: white for the student, black for the master. The intermediate colors are not Korean. They come from Japanese judo (Kanō system, late 19th century) and were adopted in Taekwondo during the 20th century as a way to mark student progress with more granularity.

Today those six colors mark the path between snow and night. Touch each one to discover what it represents.

Philosophy

Purity, seed, absence of prior knowledge. It is the snow on which there are no footprints yet. The student begins without notions of the art, open to receive what the dojang offers.

It does not symbolize ignorance, but readiness. The white belt is the hardest to keep clean. Every practice leaves a mark.

Philosophy

The earth at dawn. The seed receives light and begins to take root. The fundamentals of Taekwondo settle into the student's body.

It is the first visible color of the journey. It marks the moment when the practitioner understands their position before the master and before themselves.

Philosophy

The plant grows, visibly. The student acquires basic skills; their technique begins to take shape and strength. Growth is evident to them and to others.

This is the belt of those who are no longer beginners but not yet veterans. The stage of greatest dropout risk. Also of greatest commitment.

Philosophy

The sky toward which the plant grows. Aspiration, controlled ambition. Techniques become sophisticated and the student sets their sights higher.

This is the moment of qualitative leap: kicks gain height and precision, forms are interpreted with personal meaning.

Philosophy

Danger and warning. The student already possesses techniques that can injure; they must control them with mental and emotional discipline.

Red is the most demanding belt before black. The practitioner is no longer just a student — they are responsible for what they know.

Philosophy

Opposite to white. Maturity, depth, mastery of one's own path. Invulnerable to fear and darkness.

The black belt is not the end. It marks the beginning of true study: each subsequent DAN deepens another layer of the art. That is why, traditionally, it is never washed — the accumulated history within it is honored.
