Bolivia
WT · Kukkiwon
Origins
The pioneers: how Taekwondo arrived in Bolivia
South Korean cultural cooperation and the first dojangs in La Paz
Taekwondo arrived in Bolivia in the early 1970s through South Korean technical cooperation programmes, part of a broader diplomatic strategy that brought Korean martial arts instructors to dozens of Latin American countries. The first dojangs opened in La Paz, the political capital and administrative heart of the country, where a small but active Korean community had begun to settle.
The altitude of La Paz — situated at 3,600 metres above sea level — imposed unique conditions on the sport from the start: intense cardiovascular training, adapted to the thin air, became a defining characteristic of early Bolivian Taekwondo. Despite scarce resources and limited institutional support, the first generation of instructors managed to establish a training culture that would endure for decades.
Federation
The Bolivian Taekwondo Federation (FBT)
Governing body affiliated with WT, COB and PATU
The Federación Boliviana de Taekwondo (FBT) was established as the national governing body for Olympic Taekwondo in Bolivia. It holds official affiliations with World Taekwondo (WT), the Comité Olímpico Boliviano (COB) and the Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU), which provides the institutional framework for Bolivian athletes to compete at continental and world levels.
The FBT coordinates regional associations across Bolivia's main cities and departments, with La Paz and Cochabamba serving as the principal hubs of competitive activity. The federation has worked to expand the sport beyond the urban centres, promoting Taekwondo in schools and universities as part of a grassroots development strategy, though funding and infrastructure remain ongoing challenges.
Bolivarian Games
Bolivia at the Bolivarian Games
The most regular regional stage for Bolivian TKD
The Bolivarian Games have historically been the most important regional stage for Bolivian Taekwondo. Competing against nations such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Panama, Bolivian athletes have used these multi-sport events to measure their progress and gain exposure at the continental level. The games represent a more accessible competitive window than the Pan American or Olympic circuits, and Bolivia has consistently sent delegations to every edition.
At the Valledupar 2022 Bolivarian Games, Bolivia's Taekwondo team demonstrated the continued commitment of the federation to regional competition. While medals against powerhouses like Colombia remain elusive, participation has helped identify promising athletes and build competitive experience at the international level. The Bolivarian circuit remains the primary pathway for emerging Bolivian competitors.
Pan American

Consistent participation without medals — on the road to 2028
Bolivia has maintained a consistent presence at the Pan American Games across multiple editions, demonstrating the federation's commitment to continental competition even without podium results. At Lima 2019, Bolivian Taekwondo competitors faced the gap that separates developing programmes from the regional powers — countries like Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, which have invested systematically in high-performance sport infrastructure.
The path to Los Angeles 2028 remains ambitious but not unreachable for Bolivia: improved technical cooperation, altitude-based training advantages, and a new generation of athletes trained under more professional conditions could gradually narrow the competitive gap. Without an Olympic classification to date, the focus remains on consistent participation, medal-building at Bolivarian level, and long-term athlete development.
Present
Current state and development of Bolivian TKD
A developing sport — base in La Paz (3,600 m) and Cochabamba
Bolivian Taekwondo today is a sport in steady development, anchored in the cities of La Paz and Cochabamba. La Paz, at 3,600 metres, has become a unique training environment: the altitude naturally develops aerobic capacity and respiratory efficiency, which some coaches have begun to frame as a physiological advantage for endurance in competition. Clubs operate primarily in schools, universities and community sports centres, reaching a growing number of practitioners.
Bolivia has not yet secured an Olympic classification in Taekwondo, but the FBT continues to work towards international qualifying targets. The sport's growth is driven largely by youth programmes and the affordability of the discipline relative to other sports. Without the financial resources of larger federations, progress depends on the dedication of local coaches and the enthusiasm of a new generation of Bolivian athletes who see Taekwondo as a viable competitive pathway.
