WT · Kukkiwon

Pioneers

The pioneers: Taekwondo arrives in Ecuador

From Korean dojangs to the first organized clubs in Quito and Guayaquil

Taekwondo arrived in Ecuador in the mid-1970s, in the context of the continental expansion promoted by the WTF. The first Korean instructors and practitioners introduced the discipline in Quito and Guayaquil, establishing the foundations of what would become an organised national movement.

By 1980, organised dojangs already existed in the main cities of the country. The Korean community played a fundamental role in those early years, transmitting the technical and cultural values of the discipline to the first Ecuadorian generations of practitioners.

Federation

The Ecuadorian Taekwondo Federation (FET)

Official WT governing body — affiliated with the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee

The Ecuadorian Taekwondo Federation (FET) was officially founded and recognised as the national governing body for the sport. Affiliated with World Taekwondo (WT) and the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE), the FET took on the responsibility of organising national championships and coordinating the country's international representation.

The FET oversees and develops both kyorugi and poomsae disciplines at a national level. Through a federative structure covering the country's main provinces, it has promoted the sport's growth and supported athletes seeking to compete on the continental and world stage.

Pan American

Ecuador at the Pan American Games

Uninterrupted continental presence since Winnipeg 1999

Ecuador has participated regularly in the Pan American Games since Winnipeg 1999, maintaining an uninterrupted continental presence through to Santiago 2023. Ecuadorian athletes have competed primarily in kyorugi, achieving results up to the quarterfinals and demonstrating a sustained level of competitive performance across successive games.

Despite strong performances, Ecuador has yet to claim its first Pan American medal in Taekwondo. This goal has become a driving force behind the FET's technical development programmes and serves as a motivating target for the current generation of Ecuadorian athletes.

Glenda Reyes: Ecuador's most notable TKD figure

Pioneer of women's high-performance TKD in Ecuador

Glenda Reyes is the best-known Ecuadorian WT athlete on the national and international stage. Competing in kyorugi, she has taken part in the WT circuit and Olympic qualifying tournaments, placing herself as the first media figure of Ecuadorian women's Taekwondo and a benchmark for future generations.

Her trajectory represents a generational reference in the development of high-performance women's TKD in Ecuador. Reyes has opened doors for a new wave of Ecuadorian female athletes, demonstrating that the country can produce competitive athletes on the international stage.

During the 2016–2024 Olympic cycles, the FET has been active in the qualifying process, participating in the Continental Qualification Tournament and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament. These efforts reflect a strategic commitment to competing at the highest level of international Taekwondo.

Quito and Guayaquil have consolidated as the main elite training centres in the country, supporting technification programmes aimed at raising the competitive ceiling of Ecuadorian athletes. The FET's ongoing investment in coaching and infrastructure positions Ecuador for greater future impact in Olympic competition.

Regional

Guayaquil and the Ecuadorian coast: the second TKD hub

The province of Guayas as Ecuador's second WT TKD engine

Since the 1990s, Guayaquil and the Ecuadorian coast have established themselves as the country's second Taekwondo hub. Cities such as Manta and Portoviejo, along with the broader province of Guayas, developed a significant base of dojangs affiliated to the FET, creating a regional structure that complements the Andean centre in Quito.

The coastal region has contributed dozens of affiliated clubs to the national federation, broadening the geographic reach of Ecuadorian WT Taekwondo and providing a second engine of growth. This dual-city dynamic between Quito and Guayaquil has strengthened the overall development of the sport at a national level.
