Hwa-Rang (화랑) honors the group of young Hwa-Rang warriors from the Silla Dynasty (7th century), pioneers who unified the three dynasties of Korea. Its 29 movements allude to the 29th Infantry Division, where General Choi Hong Hi served and where modern Taekwondo was forged. It is the Tul for 2nd Gup (red belt). It introduces the U-shaped block (gewi makgi), the palm base attack (sonbadak ollyo chigi), and the first continuous sequence of kick-block-punch. The red belt symbolizes danger: the practitioner possesses sufficient technique to cause harm and must learn control.
