42 movimientos
General Ul-Ji Moon Dok. The 42 movements represent the age of the author (Choi Hong Hi) when he designed the pattern. The diagram is shaped like an 'L' (initial of Ul-Ji's surname). He defeated the Tang army in 612 A.D.
Ul-Ji (을지) honors General Ul-Ji Moon Dok, who with 5,000 soldiers defeated a Chinese Tang army of 300,000 in 612 A.D. through a strategic ambush. Its 42 movements represent the age of author Choi Hong Hi when he designed this pattern in 1955. It is a 4th Dan Tul. It introduces the knife-hook block (sonkal goro makgi), the full-circle sweeping kick, and the attack with two fists in opposite directions simultaneously. Its complex and angular diagram reproduces the geography of the Salsu valley where the battle took place. It demands absolute mastery of balance on a single leg.
