Sam-Il (삼일, '3 January') commemorates the Independence Movement of March 1st, 1919, when 33 Korean patriots signed the Declaration of Independence against Japanese occupation. Its 33 movements represent those 33 signatories. It is a 3rd Dan Tul. It introduces the pressing two-hand block (doo palmok noollo makgi), the low sweep kick (bituro chagi), and the fighting stance. The rhythm of the pattern alternates rapid bursts with marked pauses, reproducing the pulse of an act of collective resistance. It is among the shortest black belt Tul but demanding in rhythmic precision.
