Kwang-Gae (광개) honors King Gwang-Gae-Toh-Wang (374–413 A.D.) of Koguryo, who reclaimed the lost territories of the ancient dynasty. Its 39 movements represent the year 391 A.D. when he ascended to the throne. The pattern diagram evokes territorial expansion. It is the first Tul of 1st degree black belt, along with Po-Eun and Ge-Baek. It introduces the arc sliding block, the reverse kick with full rotation (bandae dollyo goro chagi), and the formal ITF fighting stance (moa junbi sogi B). As the first Tul of black belt, it formalizes the sine wave in each movement, the technical hallmark of modern ITF.
